A transatlantic link up. LA based rappers Gavlyn and Blimes Brixton team up with London based producers Walter Ego, Lean Low and RV Scruface. Dodgy coalesces contemporary hip hop and r&b sounds with earnest lyricism and bold vocals.
‘Adios’ is the compelling opener that affirms the crews’ work ethic, with a poignant mantra delivered by Blimes: “If you turning down… then adios”. Walter Ego’s production lends a hard-hitting beat featuring a spectral synth, bone-snapping drums, battle-cry horns and a heavy 808 bass.
Lean Low and RV Scruface handle production duties on ‘George Clooney’, a comical ceremonial ode to the retention of youthful looks and staying “fine’ till you die.” ‘Timezones’ is a retrospective nod to Blimes & Gavlyn’s globe-trotting tour schedule, spanning North America and Europe, and more recently making new waves in South America.
When the duo played with DJ Dubplates at SXSW in 2015, they coincidentally stayed at the same spot in Austin as Lean Low and Walter Ego. The gang immediately hit it off when they met and naturally kept in touch and have collaborated on several projects. Things went full circle. The EP was created in London during summer 2015 when Gavlyn & Blimes toured Europe but the final vocal mixes were done by Lou Koo back in LA. ‘Timezones’ embodies the very sentiment of their working relationship.
